How It Works
Our volunteer on-boarding process has been developed to ensure that our tutors are sensitive to the unique educational needs of students in out-of-home care, aware of the support available to them as volunteers, and full equipped to begin tutoring.
Our Process
Our volunteer on-boarding process has been developed to ensure that our tutors are sensitive to the unique educational needs of students in out-of-home care, aware of the support available to them as volunteers, and full equipped to begin tutoring. This four-step process is outlined below.
Initial Screening & Interview
The first step in the process is the initial screening via a volunteer application form. This is where you tell us a bit about yourself, your university degree, what subjects you can tutor, and why you want to be a volunteer.
If you are a good fit for the organisation, we will arrange a phone interview to discuss the program and learn more about you.
Training
As a charity that works with youth, we have policies in place to ensure the safety of both students and volunteers.
Before joining the program, we require all volunteers to take part in a training session to learn more about tutoring, become familiar with our networks and processes, and hear from volunteers who have previously tutored youth in care.
This is also a good opportunity to meet other volunteers.
A Match is Found
Our team will then seek to find you a suitable match. This will be a student in your area, that needs help with the subject/s that you have allocated to tutor.
Once a match is found, your details will be passed on to the student’s guardian. If approved, relevant contact information will then be provided to you, so that a first session may be arranged . If a time can be found to suit both parties, the match will go ahead!
The Semester Ahead
Volunteers will meet with their student once a week for tutoring in a public place (e.g. a public library or the student’s school).
Our team will always be available to support volunteers, and will check in regularly to ensure positive outcomes for both tutor and student.
